Ambition Is the New Literacy

As building moves closer to natural language, ambition starts to function like literacy — because willingness becomes a bigger source of leverage than technical skill.

For most of history, literacy was power.

The ability to read, write, and communicate clearly did not just make people more informed. It changed who could participate in the world. It expanded who could learn, persuade, organize, and create leverage. Literacy was not simply a skill. It was a widening of agency.

That pattern repeats whenever a new literacy appears. The people who gain fluency in a new medium early usually gain leverage before the rest of the world catches up. They see opportunities others miss. They move with less dependence. They can turn intention into action more easily.

For the last few decades, one of the highest-leverage forms of literacy was technical literacy. If you could code, or work closely with people who could, you had a very different relationship to possibility. You could build tools, automate systems, launch products, reshape workflows, and create digital things that other people could only imagine from a distance.

That was a real divide. And for most people, it stayed a real divide for a long time. Software became one of the most powerful mediums in the world, but the gap between I have an idea and I can make this real was usually a technical one.

That is what is changing now. I described one half of the change in the last essay — that intelligence itself is starting to be manufactured. This essay is about the other half: what that does to the rest of us, the people doing the asking.

Because once the medium of building gets close enough to ordinary language, the bottleneck stops being technical.

It becomes psychological.

It becomes ambition. Willingness. Taste. Persistence. The ability to imagine something clearly enough to begin, and then to care enough to keep going when the first draft is rough, the result is imperfect, or the path is not obvious.

That is why I think ambition is starting to function like a kind of literacy.

I do not mean ambition in the shallow sense. Not status ambition. Not performance ambition. I mean ambition as applied willingness — the willingness to try, to build, to explore, to iterate, to turn vague instincts into real things. In a world where the tools have moved closer to ordinary language, that willingness is what determines who actually uses them.


I notice this in myself.

A few weeks ago I started building what I have been calling a family agent. The problem is one any parent will recognize. Our kids’ school sends a relentless stream of emails. Sports schedules live across three different apps. We try to maintain a shared family calendar. It is genuinely too much to keep up with, and important things slip through.

So I started building an AI agent that ingests all of it — the school emails, the sports apps, the calendar — and keeps everything in sync in one place. We can call a dedicated phone number and talk to it while driving. We can text it if we need to know what is happening today, or forward it an email and have the relevant dates automatically added to the calendar.

The thing I want to flag is not the project. It is what almost kept me from starting it.

A year ago I would not have built this. Not because I couldn’t have figured out how — but because the inner math would have stopped me. Is this really worth a few weekends of my time? Am I the right person to be doing this? Should I just hire someone, or live with the chaos like everyone else? Each of those questions used to land hard enough to put the idea down. And so I would have put it down. The family calendar would still be a mess. The school emails would still be slipping through.

What changed is not my ability. It is how cheap the first step got. Once trying costs an afternoon instead of a quarter, the inner debate quietly loses. You just start.

That is the small private version of what I think is happening at scale.


People are stepping up to ideas they used to walk past — not because they suddenly became more capable, but because the cost of the first step got small enough that the inner argument against trying lost its force. And once you do that a few times, something shifts. You stop treating systems as fixed. You start treating them as modifiable. You stop sorting your own ideas into things I could maybe do someday and things I am not the right person for. You start sorting them into things I am going to try.

That is a profound shift in agency. And it happens one quiet decision at a time.

It also changes the shape of inequality in subtle ways. The people who gain leverage in this era will not all be the ones with the deepest technical background. Many will be the ones most willing to try. The ones who learn to work with these systems as collaborators, not novelties. The ones who stop thinking of AI as a toy or a shortcut and start thinking of it as a medium.

That does not eliminate expertise. The best engineers will still be the best engineers. The best builders will still be the best builders. The bar for excellence stays high, even as the doorway gets wider. Real taste still matters. Real judgment still matters. Real execution still matters. In many cases, they may matter more than ever, because once more people can begin, the difference shifts toward who can refine, finish, and make something actually work.

But it would be a mistake to miss what is opening up just because excellence remains hard.

For a long time, many people lived with a quiet belief that building was for other kinds of people. More technical people. More trained people. More startup people. More engineering people. AI does not erase those distinctions, but it does blur them enough to change who gets to step onto the field.


That is why I think not building is becoming a more expensive choice.

I do not mean that everyone needs to launch a startup or ship software. I mean something quieter and more personal. There is a tax that gets paid by people who keep waiting for permission, or for better tools, or for someone with a more technical background to do the thing they were curious about. That tax used to be small. It is getting larger. Every week, the people who are willing to try are pulling further away from the people who are still waiting.

The gap that opens will not just be a speed gap.

It will be an ambition gap.

One person will keep seeing systems as mostly fixed and rely on existing tools, existing paths, and existing constraints. Another will increasingly see those same systems as editable. They will draft faster, test faster, automate more, explore more, and attempt more. They will not just move faster. They will think differently about what is worth trying in the first place.

That is the difference that compounds.

Because the deepest advantage in this era may not be that AI helps you do your current job better. It may be that it changes what you believe is within your reach.


You try more things. You follow more threads. You explore ideas that would have previously felt too technical, too cumbersome, or too far outside your natural lane. Some of that work will be mediocre. Some of it will fail. Some of it will never matter. But some of it will turn into real leverage, real products, real systems, real learning, and real confidence. And the person doing the trying becomes someone slightly different on the other side of each attempt.

That process compounds in a way that the old version of work could not.

Which is why I keep coming back to literacy. Literacy changed who could participate in the life of the mind. Technical literacy changed who could shape the digital world. And now we are entering a moment where ambition itself starts to function like a kind of literacy — because the people willing to use this new medium will increasingly gain access to forms of leverage that used to sit farther away.

This is not an invitation to become an engineer.

It is an invitation to become more agentic.

To become someone who is a little less likely to stop at the idea and a little more likely to follow it into form. To become someone who sees new tools not just as ways to save time, but as ways to expand the range of what feels possible. To become someone who notices that the medium has changed, and with it, their own relationship to action.

Every new literacy creates a new distribution of possibility.

The people who learn to build with this one will not just do more.

They will become more ambitious about what can be done at all.
